BCCAP Focuses on Raising Awareness During Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

During March, the Brookings Colorectal Cancer Awareness Program focused on raising awareness in recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. As one of the most common cancers affecting both men and women, it primarily affects individuals over the age of 50. However, recent data shows a concerning rise in diagnoses among younger adults, making early detection and regular screening more critical than ever.

Founded in 2021, BCCAP is a student-led initiative launched through South Dakota State University’s School of Communication and Journalism. What began as a classroom project has since grown into a community-driven effort that combines education, engagement and fundraising to make a lasting impact in Brookings County.

This year’s student team has raised over $1,100 to date, adding to the $2,400 collected over the past four years. These funds directly support Brookings Health System, helping to fund educational materials, community outreach and screening resources for residents.

“Every screening matters, and thanks to the funds raised through our partnership with BCCAP, we are able to provide education, raise awareness and support screenings for those in need,” said Brittany Venekamp, director of the Brookings Health System Foundation. “These funds are reinvested into local health care, helping to strengthen our messaging and outreach efforts. Early detection is lifesaving, and we are incredibly grateful for the support that enables us to make a lasting difference in our community.”

One of this year’s campaign events was a restorative yoga class hosted at Synergy Strength Studio. This class offered attendees a unique way to engage with the campaign and take time for their health. The BCCAP team also participated in the SDSU Benefits Fair, where students talked to university employees about the campaign’s purpose.

A key factor in BCCAP's success is its collaboration with local businesses. These partnerships not only help fund the campaign but also strengthen ties between SDSU students and the broader Brookings community. Local sponsors have generously provided items for giveaways and monetary donations and helped amplify awareness across the community. Contributors to this year’s campaign include Muth Electric, Avera Health, Millborn Seeds, Brookings Health System, Hand Tied Floral Boutique, SDSU School of Communication and Journalism, University Marketing and Communications employees, SDSU Theatre and Dance, Synergy Strength Studio, and SDSU Human Resources.

In the coming years, BCCAP will continue to expand its efforts by strengthening community partnerships and reaching a broader audience through social media, community outreach and events. As one of the most preventable cancers, BCCAP’s work serves as a powerful reminder that awareness and action can be life-saving.
