Screening Methods

colonoscopy

During a colonoscopy, a doctor uses a thin flexible tube to check for polyps or cancer inside the rectum and colon.

During this form of screening, a doctor can find and remove any polyps. It is recommended that colonoscopies are performed every 10 years.

stool tests

The guaiac-based fecal occult blood test is done once a year at home, using a chemical called guaiac to detect blood in the stool.

The fecal immunochemical test is done once a year at home, using antibodies to detect blood in the stool.

FIT –DNA tests are done once every three years. An entire stool sample is collected at home and sent to a lab for testing.

flexible sigmoidoscopy

Like a colonoscopy, this procedure is when a doctor places a short, flexible tube (sigmoidoscope) into the rectum.

This screening is done every 5 years, and only detects polyps in the rectum and lower third of the colon.

ct
colonoscopy

A CT colonoscopy uses X-rays and computers to produce a virtual image of the colon.

This screening method should be done every 5 years.

genetic testing

A family history of cancer means you have a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Genetic testing assesses your specific risk and sets you on the right path for early screenings to ensure any cancer you may develop is caught early and can be treated.

Take the Myriad Genetics MyRisk™ Hereditary Cancer Test to learn about the process and see if you qualify for genetic testing.
