Bum Blog: Edition 1 - Who We Are

Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are a senior capstone class at South Dakota State University looking to make a positive impact in the community of Brookings.
This class, made up of seven upperclassmen, is looking to put an exclamation point on our college education experience with an awareness campaign covering colorectal cancer. This is the most influential school project any of us have ever done. It’s not just for show or adding on to our professional portfolio, we are looking to spread awareness over colorectal cancer, a serious issue that takes thousands of lives every year.
As a class, we aren’t medical experts, but we do know how to strategically use communication channels effectively thanks to our com
bined education and internship experience. Our overall objective is to increase the awareness of colorectal cancer by explaining the need to live a healthy lifestyle and stay up to date on symptoms through a campaign targeting young adults ages 21-30 living in Brookings from March to May.
Don’t get me wrong, we don’t want to scare people, which is why as the audience, you’ll see a fair share of butt jokes and puns to lighten the mood over the next two months, but we need to get the word out! Colorectal cancer is something that sneaks up on a lot of people and goes unnoticed. The symptoms aren’t as revealing as other diseases. If left untreated, colorectal cancer can be fatal.
The most common question we are anticipating is, “I thought you should be in your 40s or 50s before you get a colonoscopy?” Yes that is true, but th
at doesn’t mean our target age group (21-30) can’t do anything to prevent the chances of having colorectal cancer later in life. In this blog series, you will find out a buttload of ways to lower your risk in everyday tasks.
So don’t fall behind in our campaign. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram and visit our website to stay up to date on the latest news and updates. We encourage you to join us in this campaign and beyond as this is just the start of something big. Save your time, save your effort and save your life.
Great job!
